Sayaka Ōsaki
2021.10

PARADISE AIR and “THEATRE for ALL,” an online theatre for barrier-free and multilingual audiences, collaborated. The “City and Poetry Workshop” was held for middle and high school students and adults.
This project features poet Sayaka Ōsaki as a guest, trying to create their own original poems. Participants had different approaches to poetry, including those who write poetry on a regular basis and those who are not usually aware of poetry. The workshop began with a discussion of “favourite poems” and “what is poetry?” Then, they watched the video work I/O, in which Ms Ōsaki wrote a poem on the work of artist Yuko Mohri, which is currently on view at THEATRE for ALL, and Ms Ōsaki gave them a lecture on the other side of thinking about words from the work.
Then, together with the PARADISE AIR coordinator, we went out into the city of Matsudo to collect words. Based on episodes related to the place and the sounds of the place, the participants put their feelings into words and wrote them down in PARADISE AIR’s original notebook. On the last day of the program, a presentation was held at Cafe Wakamatsu, where the participants read out their poems. Each participant completed a wonderful poem based on an episode they had experienced in Matsudo.
Ms Ōsaki said that people often have an image of poetry as words coming from the inside. Words are something that surrounds us in our daily lives. How to find it and turn it into poetry. Participants learned this important perspective from Ms Ōsaki, and through the workshop, they spent two precious days carefully confronting their words.
The first online theatre in Japan to provide barrier-free accessibility and multilingual translation of various productions in theatre, dance, film, and media arts through audio guidance, barrier-free subtitles, sign language interpretation, and other methods. Learning programs such as explanatory videos and pre-and post-viewing workshops are also held in conjunction with the works.
