seijiro murayama
2022.09 - 2022.10

We held an improvised participatory music performance event by seijiro murayama, an resident artist of the SHORTSTAY Program. suzueri and Hiroyuki Ura were invited as guest performers to join murayama, who has been working on improvised contemporary music, mainly using percussion and voice.
The event was likened to a “game of impressions” in shogi (Japanese chess), with the performers and audience members sharing their impressions after the live improvised performance, and then listening to a recording of the earlier improvised performance and enjoying the differences, while the performers and audience members reflected and conversed once again.
While suzueri played and strummed her own piano instrument while moving around the room, Ura played guitar, looping a cassette tape that could be recorded for 10 seconds, cutting it with scissors, and then reassembled it with cellophane tape. In contrast to this movement, the quiet murayama with his forehead wrinkled and arms folded, listened intently, his drums and voice piercing through from time to time. It was a live performance session of three people with the atmosphere constantly changing from moment to moment. After the performance, there was also a lively discussion for the audience and performers to talk about what impressed them and what they thought of the performance.
