Hand and Face
2023.10 - 2023.12

A participatory workshop was held by Long Stay Program 2023 resident artists, Hands and Faces (Hyejin Chung and Jung-Ah Kang).
Hand and Face, based in Korea, creates artworks that create and give value to relationships between people through text, video, and performance. The research titled <Rolling Motherland> conducted in Matsudo this time was supported by interviews with people from various cultural backgrounds.
<Rolling Motherland>
Through guidelines prepared by Hand and Face and silent guidance by Hand and Face, a 30-minute participatory program on “hometown (furusato)” was conducted. In an installation space set up for solitary contemplation, participants wrote a letter with an image of the word “hometown” in the language they normally use. The letter was then read out in the form of a call to an anonymous woman in the back projected at the end of the corridor. The recordings were used for future artwork and for the exhibition scheduled for December.
Where is your nostalgic ‘Hometown’?
We are creating a workshop that will take you back to your nostalgic land through sights, sounds, and memories. Tell us your story.
We are always strangers. We are always leaving the place where we live – It could be where we live now, or it could be someone’s village that we left. (I hope you have another, unexpected home.)
Let me ask you this: If you didn’t have Google Maps, what clues would you use to find your home? A home is a place you’ve always dreamed of, a heart you’ve loved, a time you’ve missed. Even if it’s gone now, the home you want to find is in your mind. So what do you rely on most to find your way home? No maps, of course – you rely on the weather, the smell of the air, and the scenes in your memory.
