Melanie Windl works on the intersection of sound, video, sculpture and space.
Windl merges these various levels to complex audio-visual environments. Simple objects serially assembled form large biomorphic structures. They contain groups of sound-transmitters playing multi-channel audio-compositions. For the composition process Windl creates her own sonic material during research sessions in the sound-lab. The artist also collects field recordings during extensive journeys in different countries of the world. In recent artworks the artist began to integrate different methods of interactivity into her work aiming to hand over the process of compositing to the audience itself. Thereby Windl creates open, inviting and immersive artificial environments.
2010 Melanie Windl graduated from Art Academy HBKsaar in Saarbrücken, Germany and became “Meisterschüler” of the internationally renowned sound-artist Christina Kubisch. Postgradual studies led her to the School of Music at Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz where she graduated in 2015 as a Master of Music in Sound-Art Composition.
In her young career Melanie Windl already received major awards: Among them the Sponsorship-Stipend of the State Capital Saarbruecken, Germany in 2011, Artist in Residence Stipends of the internationally renowned Foundation Kuenstlerdorf Schoeppingen, Germany in 2013, 2014 and 2015. An invitation of the finish Arte Artist’s Association led Melanie Windl 2015 to Turku, Finland. 2016 she took part in the Tokyo Experimental Festival Vol. 10, an annual Performance and Sound-Art Festival organized by the Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation of History and Culture. Currently the young artist holds a Junior-Membership of the Gutenberg Academy Mainz, Germany.
During her residency at Paradise AIR Melanie Windl will create and exhibit the work “mixtape”, an interactive cable and tape-drawing for 3 channel audio and a white wall.
